Lets Share the Crown

AllAboutTheManyThingsWeHaveUntoTheWorldContributed

Black History Month is a necessary construct in a country like Britan where white folk are the dominant caste. I just got back from Zambia.... No need to celebrate black achievement there. No reminders necessary.... Black folk see their reflection in every facet and stratum of society - from rich to poor.

'The Crown' (Gary Byrd and the G.B.E.) speaks to me as a metaphor for pre-eminence, being 'on top'... or, simply having 'something to be proud of'. When I was a lad (15, I think) this record inspired me; it affirmed me as a black yout' struggling for identity and acceptance in a a white man's world. Multiracial Britain has moved on much since those days and we enjoy black and minority ethnic (BME) representation all over the media. We are so much more visible and influential than when I was a lad in the 70s. We wear the crown in pop music (RnB, grime, etc = pop) and in sport - and that's without trying! On a level playing field where inequality and discrimination are lifted, we could wear the crown in all social fields. In a white man's country wearing the crown for BMEs is simply having an equal stake in society and an equal chance to fulfil potential.

Here's to a moment of future resounding consensus when media columns across Britian, USA and Canada can chime together:"Black History month has become superfluous." Amen.

It was moving for me, a black Briton, watching President Obama's live full address,  to see the (mainly white) folks at the top of English political, official and religious society hanging onto every word of the message being brought by this great black leader to Westminster Hall. I watched as tey clapped to attract his attention to them as he walked up the aisle of that great hall, after he delivered them a great lesson.

Westminster Hall was built over 900 years ago. It was there before the British hatched their plan to trade in African slaves, it investigated the business of the trade while it was going on and, latterly in 2007, it hosted an exhibition to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Abolition of the British Slave Trade.

As I watched President Obama proudly, I was reminded of the feelings I long since surrendered to the truth found in the freedom of forgiveness. To err is human, to forgive Divine. Jesus said "Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matthew 5:48).

Big up, Obama! You a bigga man fi dem, still!
